About Mark Williams

Mark Williams MP has been active in Ceredigion politics for over two decades.

Born in 1966, he came to Aberystwyth as a student in 1984. Graduating in politics
in 1987, he worked as Constituency Assistant for Ceredigion’s Liberal Democrat MP,
Geraint Howells for five years, and as a Research Assistant for the Liberal Democrat
peers in the House of Lords. This political education gave Mark a unique insight into
both the workings of parliament and the priorities of people in Ceredigion, and the
late Lord Geraint continued to be a mentor to and staunch supporter of Mark until
his death.

After teacher training, Mark worked in schools in Cornwall and Devon before
becoming Deputy Headteacher at Llangorse Primary School near Brecon in 2000.
However, like many local people who have had to move away to find employment,
Mark always maintained a deep passion for Ceredigion and its traditions. He is a
Welsh learner and taught Welsh to his primary school class.

His election victory in 2005 was on his third attempt at standing for parliament for
the Liberal Democrats in Ceredigion. In the 2000 by-election he achieved a
spectacular result taking the Liberal Democrats back into second place and in the
2001 General Election he further increased the Liberal Democrat vote and cut Plaid
Cymru’s majority to 3,944. On May 5th, he sensationally won Ceredigion on a 6%
swing by overturning the majority and replacing it with one of his own of 219.

Mark and his wife, Helen, live in Borth with their three young daughters Eleanor,
Anna and Eliza and their son Oliver.
